Joanne is in high school and was embarrassed with the appearance of her teeth and smile. When she smile her teeth looked short and she showed to much of her gums. She had already gone through braces for two years, but why wasn’t the orthodontist able to give her a great smile? Did she need longer teeth?
When she came to Dr. Huefner she was almost in tears. She was dreadfully afraid that she would have to have jaw surgery of go back into braces. However, Dr. Huefner evaluated her teeth and gums.
Joanne thought her teeth were too short and she showed too much of her gums (gummy smile).
Dr. Huefner told Joanne that her teeth weren’t short at all, but rather she had some extra gum tissue that overlapped her gums. He also mentioned that possibly, if she waited several years, that her gums might correct themselves. However Joanne said she could wait for that “possibility”. What if it didn’t or took too long to correct itself?
Then Dr. Huefner told her something that absolutely excited her. Dr. Huefner could use his dental gum laser and painlessly reshape her gums, a cosmetic dental procedure called a “gum lift”. It could be done in a matter of minutes with just a local anesthetic (novocain) and she would walk out of the office with normal length teeth and a less gummy smile! As you might guess, she had the “gum lift” done the next day. See what an improvement in her smile. Note that even though nothing at all was done to her teeth that her teeth now looked longer and showed less gums when she smiled.

Old dentistry! Many times old dentistry, especially towards the front or side of your mouth, just doesn’t cut it anymore and can be down right embarrassing. This is especially when appearing your best in public is important. Rhonda was just such a person and she was ready for a change and wanted to “finally have a nice smile!”

Her old dentistry was done in the era when dentists believed “natural” (usually meaning yellow) was the best way to go and Rhonda wanted whiter teeth this time around. Also, the bridge on her upper right teeth was breaking and she felt really “looked ugly”. She was excited to learn that all her old dentistry could be replaced with beautiful, like-like natural looking porcelain in just a couple of visits. So, we replaced her old dentistry with new, whiter porcelain restorations just like Rhonda wanted and she was absolutely thrilled with the results. We utilized porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry to give her a whiter, brighter smile.

Steven was a rugged guy, but as a very successful businessman he was getting embarrassed with the appearance of his smile. Everything else was in order, he dressed well, is in great physical shape (goes to the gym four times a week) and is a good public speaker. It was time to get his smile in shape. What could we do to correct his “smile problems”?

The solution to Steven’s unattractive teeth and smile was to place porcelain veneers on his upper and lower teeth, and a porcelain bridge to replace a missing tooth. He also wanted “whiter teeth”, and he chose a color in the bleaching shade range. Since he was very masculine we used a more squarish shaped teeth for his incisors, which was in harmony with his personality.

Crowded teeth and extremely gummy bothered Monica. And she really hated what she referred to as her “fang teeth”!
BEFORE
Her teeth were so crowded that orthodontics was the best treatment, but she said “No way! I never would go through braces.” She then asked me, “Is there any other way you can help me with cosmetic dentistry?” Fortunately for her, the answer was “Yes.” We gave her the option of laser gum recontouring to correct her “over gummy smile”. After that was healed, we could give her straight teeth by placing porcelain veneers, a procedure we oftentimes call “instant orthodontics”. Below is a photo three days after reshaping away her excess gums with the dental gum laser.

We recommended 8 or 10 porcelain veneers, but she could only afford to do the six front teeth at this time. Here is the amazing photo of Monica with her new smile with six porcelain veneers. Notice….no more fang-teeth!

Kathleen had misaligned, misshaped, discolored teeth and wanted a nice smile. As an adult in her late 40s, she didn’t want to have to go through years of braces. Is there another way, she asked? Would cosmetic dentistry correct her problem and give her a great smile?
